Read below for tips from your HeartCORE Coach Kristen on how to get back on your workout track after the lazy days of summer.

During the summer months, we see a lot of people gradually slipping away from their normal routines. Whether it is due to school being out, having the kids home, vacation time, or just wanting to relax and enjoy the nice weather, we often find our regular workout schedule gets pushed aside.  With the new school year here and fall approaching, this can serve as the perfect time to get back into the swing of things and kick start your motivation for your personal fitness once again. Creating a SMART goal could be the right way to begin getting back on track with your fitness routine.  SMART planning involves coming up with a goal which is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. Setting SMART goals is a strategy that provides the clarity, focus and motivation that is needed to achieve your goals.  Goal planning encourages you to define your objectives and set a completion date for them. When your goal is evident you have a better chance of making it definite and measurable, and therefore achievable.

  1. Make sure your goal is SPECIFIC. The more specific that you are able to make your goal, the higher chance you’ll have of achieving it. In order to make sure that your goal is specific enough; you should ask yourself the six “W’s” – Who is involved? What do I want to achieve? When do I want this to be accomplished by? Where will this take place? Why do I want to get to this goal? Which resources are needed?
  2. Ensure your goal is MEASURABLE, allowing you to get a grasp on your starting point, and giving you an idea of your progress on the way to achieving your goal. You are able to plan for accomplishing smaller goals on the way to a main goal, and track your progress as you go.
  3. Is your goal ATTAINABLE? This involves taking into account the time and effort that it will take you to achieve it, and weighing it against the expected results.
  4. How REALISTIC is your goal? This forces you to consider if the goal you have set is something you are capable of achieving. You are the only one who can decide how high vs. low you want to set your goal. However, it is best to ensure that each and every goal represents a significant amount of progress towards your end goal. You will find you gain more of a reward when you challenge yourself and eventually progress to your overall goal.
  5. Lastly, make sure that the goal you have set for yourself can be achieved in a TIMELY manner. The idea is that having a deadline of some sort will help you to spring into action, and begin working towards your goal. Having a deadline that is too short may make you feel like you have set out on an impossible task, whereas a deadline that is too far in the future may make you feel like you have loads of time to accomplish your goal and can cause you to procrastinate.
