Kids programming is a growing branch of Heart Niagara that responds to the emerging need to positively address the issues of obesity, diabetes and physical literacy.
During the past three years, Heart Niagara has piloted summer kid’s camps, mobile programming, an after-school program and HeartCORE for Kids. The goal is to provide affordable, quality programming and health education to influence healthy choices.
In April 2016, Heart Niagara hosted the region’s first-ever Niagara Physical Literacy Summit. More than 300 people including students, educators, recreation leaders and coaches participated in the event.
The summit consisted of 30-minute workshops throughout the day. Students in Grades 2, 3, 4 and 5 moved from workshop to workshop, engaging in activities designed to increase their physical literacy, while teachers and professionals participated in programs focused on fostering physical literacy.
