February is Heart Month. A time to commit to a healthy lifestyle and make small changes that can lead to a lifetime of heart health.
During Heart Month, Heart Niagara is encouraging positive heart healthy changes. That’s why we’re asking everyone to take the Heart Month challenge!
Complete one or all three of the challenges outlined below, tweet a picture of you doing the challenge and include @heartniagara along with the hashtag #HNheartchallenge, or email the picture to firstname.lastname@example.org, during Heart Month (February 1-28) and you’ll be entered to WIN Yoga classes and a HeartCORE pass!
Here are the Heart Month challenges:
1. Eat 5 servings of vegetables and fruit each day:
Fresh and heart-healthy fruits and vegetables are an important part of your overall healthy eating plan. They are high in vitamins, minerals and fiber and low in fat and calories. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables may help you control your weight and your blood pressure.
2. Get up and move every HOUR:
More time spent standing rather than sitting could improve your blood sugar, fats in the blood and cholesterol levels, according to a new study published in the European Heart Journal. The study also shows that replacing time spent sitting with time walking could have additional benefits for your waistline and body mass index (BMI).
3. Take a minute to breathe:
Take some time each day to clear your mind and just focus on your breathing. It’s easy to get caught up in the stresses of the day, so take a minute and allow yourself time to relax.
Now, let’s get started on the Heart Month challenge!
