 Parents

Remember when you had your cholesterol assessed by Heart Niagara in grade 9?

Heart Niagara has upgraded all the testing equipment used in the program to current standards. With the new generation of students participating in our program, we've enjoyed hearing parent's stories on how our program positively impacted them and their families lives following their own assessment a generation ago. We are hoping to do the same for your children now, and to continue our dedication to a healthier Niagara.

Share your story of your grade 9 heart health experience!

Students

The HHSP is a great learning experience for students to learn about their heart health and prevent getting heart disease. The assessment provides many students with their first BP and cholesterol assessment. This allows for a great opportunity to introduce normal BP and cholesterol ranges to students. Participants benefit from becoming certified in our free Level "A" CPR/AED training, as these are great skills for lifesaving and resume building for entry level jobs.

Teachers

The Healthy Heart Schools' Program is currently available for grades 7, 9, and 11. Additional school programs are also available which can encompass the entire school community. Click here for a list of all programs currently available.

“A fabulous learning program that the whole class enjoyed!” – Teacher in South Lincoln

The grade 7 and 9 program includes:

Heart Health Assessment involves each student having their height, weight, waist circumference and blood pressure measured. The grade 9 assessment day also includes a non-fasting cholesterol test (finger prick). A booklet which includes a parental consent page and family history and lifestyle questionnaire is completed before the assessment day. Height, weight, and waist circumference measurements take place behind privacy barriers.

CPR/AED involves each student learning how to perform adult and child CPR and how to act in a choking emergency. Students also learn about AEDs, how they work, and why they are so important in the chain of survival. The grade 11 Specialist High Skills Major supplement includes the above plus Standard First Aid training.
