Obesity rates among children and youth in Canada have nearly tripled in the last 30 years. Childhood obesity puts kids at risk for health problems that were once seen only in adults, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
The good news is that childhood obesity can be prevented. In honour of National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, Heart Niagara encourages your family to make healthy changes together.
Heart Niagara’s Healthy Heart Schools’ Program was established in 1987. The program works with local schools to deliver lifesaving and disease prevention education to students in grades 5, 7 and 9.
Annually, Heart Niagara delivers programs in over 30 secondary and 100 elementary schools in Niagara reaching more than 6,000 families.
“We want kids to know what could happen if they don’t reduce their screen time, get more sleep, stay hydrated, eat well-balanced meals and stay active,” said Karen Stearne, Heart Niagara’s Executive Director.
In 2015, Heart Niagara launched an innovative strength training program and facility called, HeartCORE.
The high-intensity resistance training program is designed to increase strength and metabolism during a 15-minute, once a week, workout. The routine, performed with slow controlled movements, is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
This fall, HeartCORE will continue to host daily physical fitness classes that include core strength, body boot camp and stretch and fit. Recently, Yoga and Zumba have also been added to the regular schedule.
HeartCORE’s program manager, Michelle Durante, is a Certified Exercise Physiologist® who has experience in personal training, group training, health promotion and clinical exercise settings. She can assist your family in creating a customized program that will help everyone reach their fitness goals. Taking small steps as a family can help your child stay at a healthy weight.
HeartCORE is located at Heart Niagara. The address is 4635B Queen Street in Niagara Falls. For more information call 905-358-5552 ext.109, email firstname.lastname@example.org or visit www.heartniagara.com.
