A healthy diet can reduce your risk of heart disease and other ailments, as well as improve your day-to-day life. Although many of us make plans to cut down on junk food and eat more vegetables, it can seem difficult to make long lasting improvements. Heart Niagara can show you how easy it can be to eat better and make sustainable, healthy, choices. Heart Niagara offers two types of cooking courses: Food for Life and Cooking for a Healthier You.
Cooking for a Healthier You (C4HU) Cooking Classes
C4HU will cover topics including: increasing fruits and vegetables into daily menus, adding fibre, choosing healthy fats, healthy aging, and active living. The cooking class will assist you in building menus with fibre-rich foods such as whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables.
Heart Niagara has received funding from the Branscombe Family Foundation to run a 12 month pilot project to address the needs of those wanting to choose a healthy lifestyle but face barriers due to food insecurity, low income, and/or lack of resources for food preparation.
Class schedule and location will be determined in February 2017. We are accepting gently used kitchen items to provide to participants to take home so healthy cooking can continue beyond the classes. Classes are $10.00 each or $35.00 for a series of four workshops. Heart Niagara provides additional cooking classes at a location determined by the group/organization/corporation that will meet the participants’ interest. Food for Life Courses
Food for Life is an award-winning Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) program designed by physicians, nurses, and registered dieticians that offers cancer, diabetes, weight management, and kids classes that focus on the lifesaving effects of healthful eating.
Heart Niagara’s Food for Life Classes offer a chance to discover which foods are optimal for weight management, learn about various health topics including blood pressure and digestion, and become empowered with the practical cooking skills needed to help you on your journey to better health.
In the classes, attendees do all of this while enjoying a cooking demonstration and tasting delicious, healthful dishes in a supportive group setting.
